Our kids at school love the book, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. After reading it this week, we gathered supplies for them to make their own coconut tree.

This is a fun fine motor activity for kids because it involves cutting, tearing, gluing, and tracing around the paper roll. You could also have the kids pick out the letters for their names to race up the coconut tree.

How to make a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree

We are going to use paper rolls, construction paper, tissue paper, and foam letters for our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom activity.

You need construction paper, tissue paper, a paper roll, and foam letters to make a chicka chicka boom boom craft with preschoolers

Supplies needed to make a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree

  • Long paper roll
  • Construction paper – green and red
  • Tissue paper – assorted shades of green
  • Foam letter stickers
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Pencil

Instructions for making a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree

Step 1 for making a chicka chicka boom boom tree is to cut the coconuts out of red construction paper.
Trace around the paper roll and then cut out the coconuts for your tree.

Stand the paper roll on your red construction paper. Trace around it with the pencil a few times to make the coconuts for your tree. Cut them out and set them aside for now.

Step 2

Using green construction paper, cut out leaves for your coconut tree. As you can see from the image above, our leaves almost look like a hand with three fingers on it. These don’t need to be the same, and you can draw them on the construction paper before cutting them out.

Cut or tear tissue paper to make extra leaves for your tree.

Step 4

Glue the tissue paper and construction paper leaves onto one end of the paper roll. We started with the construction paper leaves, and then added the tissue paper leaves.

Once your leaves are glued into place you can add the coconuts to your leaves, and then the foam letters racing up the tree.

Instructions

  1. Stand the paper roll up on the red construction paper and trace around it using the pencil. Cut out the red coconuts for your tree and set them aside.
  2. Draw leaves on the green construction paper and cut those out too.
  3. Tear or cut even more leaves out of the tissue paper.
  4. Glue your leaves onto one end of the paper roll and then glue your coconuts onto the leaves.
  5. Attach the foam letters to the tree racing them up the tree trunk.
