I was looking for holiday activities for kids when I realized that today is a very important day – worldwide! Today is International Literacy Day. But what does it mean?

Every year on September 8, we celebrate International Literacy Day to remind people the importance of literacy.

A lot of people don’t know what is literacy, and that’s OK! This is the simplest literacy definition that I found:

Literacy is an ability to read, write and use numeracy in at least one method of writing.

Another literacy meaning, according to UNESCO, is:

“The ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts.”

Why is Literacy Day Important?

International Literacy Day is very important! UNESCO declared September 8 as International Literacy Day to raise awareness and remind people of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights.

International Literacy Day was first celebrated on September 8, 1967, thanks to UNESCO’s General conference on 1966, which stated, “The hundreds of millions of illiterate adults still existing in the world, make it essential to change national education policies.”
