Fun facts about Black History Month

In 1915, historian Carter G. Woodson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History.
Carter G. Woodson is considered to be the Father of Black History, as he was the son of former slaves and knew how important education was to secure freedom.
11 years later, the group declared the second week of February as “Negro History Week” to recognize the contributions of African Americans.
Prior to this, few people studied Black history and it wasn’t included in textbooks.
They chose this week because it celebrated the birthdays of Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist, and Abraham Lincoln.
It wasn’t until 1976 that president Gerald Ford extended the week to a whole month, creating Black History Month.
Black History Month is observed in February in the United States and Canada, and October in the United Kingdom.
Black History Month honors all African-American men and women from all periods of U.S. history.
Some notable figures that are spotlighted during Black History Month are Martin Luther King Jr., who fought for equal rights for Black people; Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American in the United States Supreme Court in 1967; Mae Jemison, the first female African-American astronaut to travel to space in 1992, and Barack Obama, the first-ever African-American president of the U.S.
