  1. George Washington was the first president of the U.S. and served from 1789 until 1797. 
  2. He was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia, and died on December 14, 1799, in Mount Vernon, Virginia.
  3. His father died when he was 11, and his older brother Lawrence helped raise him. Washington never attended college, but he was educated in reading, writing, and mathematics. 
  4. During his 20s, he fought as a soldier in the French and Indian War. After the war, he returned to Virginia to work as a farmer. 
  5. When he was 26, Virginians elected him to their colonial legislature. 
  6. As a government official, he spoke out against unfair laws during Great Britain’s rule. 
  7. In 1774 and 1775, he was part of a group of representatives from the 13 colonies that would eventually become the U.S.
  8. In July 1776, an army was formed to oppose the British, and Washington was elected to lead it, for five years. 
  9. After the end of the war, he was elected as the first-ever president of the U.S.
  10. George Washington wrote about 18,000 letters in his lifetime – if you wrote one letter per day, that number would take 50 years. 
  11. George Washington was the only president to go into battle while serving as the president.

  1. Where and when did George Washington go into battle while serving as President of the United States? The Revolutionary War ended in 1782. After his time as president, he was in charge of the new army but he wasn’t president. Where has my education failed me? Thanks!

  2. I didn’t know to some the cupcake was unheard of. I worked at DQ in my high school days. Every year I request a DQ cake for my birthday. I have to be careful because I will chomp the whole thing down. Love love love!
