8 interesting facts about Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks was a Civil Rights Activist, who was born on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama, and died on October 24, 2005, in Detroit, Michigan.
Called “the mother of the Civil Rights Movement”, Rosa is known for seeking racial equality and the Montgomery bus boycott.
After finishing up elementary school, Rosa wanted to get a high school education but this wasn’t common for African-American girls at that time. It was hard but she worked part time jobs to finally earn her high school diploma.
Rosa once saw a black man get beaten by a white bus driver, which motivated her and her husband, Raymond Parks, to join the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
On December 1, 1955, Rosa refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus, which led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
After the boycott, Rosa was forced to move from Montgomery as she received threatening phone calls, lost her department store job, and her husband had to quit his job too. They moved to Detroit where she lived the rest of her life.
After she died at age 92, Rosa Parks was the first woman to receive a tribute at the U.S. Capitol. More than 30,000 people gathered to pay their respects.
Because of her bravery as a leader, Rosa was awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Award by the NAACP, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Congressional Gold Medal.
