This is our first page in our Juneteenth facts printable set!
  1. Juneteenth is short for June Nineteenth, which marks the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas in 1865. 
  2. It commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. and is also known as Freedom Day.
  3. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862, and went into effect on January 1, 1863. 
  4. However, slaves were not set free in the Confederacy until Union army was able to come in and take over on June 18, 1865, two years later after the order was issued. 
  5. The next day, June 19th, General Gordon Granger announced that the slaves in Texas were free by the order of the president.

This is the second printable page in our Juneteenth facts set!
  1. Even after the announcement, some slave owners decided to not tell the news and waited until the end of the cotton harvest season.
  2. Most freed slaves and their families left Texas and migrated to northern states to start a new life as they didn’t want to stay to continue working under their former owners despite the involvement of pay.
  3. Still, areas such as parks, business establishments, and schools were segregated. 
  4. As a temporary solution, former slaves pooled $800 and bought 10 acres of land known as “Emancipation Park” in 1872 which became the only public park and swimming pool in Houston open to all African-Americans, up until the 1950s.
  5. It is an official holiday in the state of Texas since the 1980s and celebrated throughout different states in the U.S.
