This turkey craft is an inexpensive Thanksgiving project for kids of all ages. You probably have everything you need at home.

Younger kids will need help cutting the feathers and facial features, but all will enjoy painting and assembling these fun turkeys. This is a great craft project to keep the kids occupied on Thanksgiving morning while you are preparing your meals and celebrations.

How to make a paper plate turkey

Using paper plates, paint, and googly eyes we are going to make an adorable Thanksgiving turkey. Set up a crafting table for the kids with all of the supplies they will need. Don’t forget to put down a layer of paper so that paint doesn’t get on the table.

Instructions for making a paper plate turkey

Step 1 - Paper plate turkey craft - Paper plates painted brown to make a turkey.
Paint a large and small paper plate with brown paint.

Step 1

Paint two coats of brown paint on one large plate along with the small plate. Allow each coat to dry before painting the next one. Set the plates aside to dry.

Cut a 2nd large paper plate in half and then cut feather shapes into the rounded edge.

Cut the 2nd large paper plate in half. Set one half aside, we’ll be using that a little bit later. Using scissors, cut feathers into the rounded edge of the other half of the plate. You’ll need to leave an inch or two of space along the straight edge to glue this side down when we reach that step.

Paint the feathers of your turkey in different colors.

Step 3

Using assorted bright colors, paint the feathers of your turkey. It doesn’t matter if the colors are mixed a little or overlap each other. We used purple, orange, red, yellow, and coral paint. Other colors you can use are green and blue. Set the feathers aside to dry.

Attach the plates together using glue.

Using glue, attach the feathers to the top of the large plate, and then attach the small plate to make the face.

Next, use the remaining section of the large paper plate to cut out a beak and wattle. Don’t forget to paint those too using red and orange paint. Once dry, attach them to the small paper plate with glue. Glue the googly eyes into place too.

  1. Paint 1 large and the small paper plate with 2 coats of brown paint, letting each coat dry before applying the next.
  2. Cut the other large paper plate in half and then cut feather shapes into the rounded side of the plate.
  3. Paint the feathers in bright colors. You'll need to paint 2 coats and then set the feathers aside to dry.
  4. Attach the feathers to the large brown plate using glue, and then attach the small brown plate over the top.
  5. Using the remaining section of the large plate, cut out a beak and wattle and paint those as well before attaching them to the small paper plate. Glue the googly eyes in place too.
